In possibly one of the most important series of articles on the state of Canadian soccer in a long time - Inside Soccer - is runnig a series of articles by Gerry Gentile a name familiar to Canadian soccer fans. Recommended reading for everyone that cares about the game in this country.
Gentile's Canadian Soccer Myths
By Gerry Gentile
In this four part series, the former chair of the CSA Working
Group and the man who presented the CUSL Blueprint to Sepp Blatter and
Michel Platini, speaks out for an alternative vision for soccer in
Canada. Gerry Gentile has co-founded 5 successful high tech businesses
which have sold over $10 billion worth of products and services
globally.
As
we lament yet another recent failed World Cup qualifying campaign and
as we see the rate of growth for registrations decline to less than 4%
per year, it is clear that to reinvigorate the game in Canada, our one
and only Goal should be to qualify for the World Cup finals… not once
but always. Participation, registrations and the financial health of
the game, its clubs and associations depends on it.
What
if Canada had not defeated Honduras 2-1 in St John’s, Newfoundland, on
a cold September 15th in 1985 and thus not qualified for our one and
only appearance at the World Cup Finals? Would we still be convinced
that not having our own national professional soccer league has
prevented us from qualifying for another World Cup finals?

Match fixing is not exactly new to professional sport including soccer
but thanks to the rise in internet betting and other factors in seems
to be in the news almost daily.
Just today the stories include but are not limited to the Russian Mob
being implicated in fixing last year's Champions League match between
Zenit St. Petersburg and Bayern Munich, wide spread corruption has been
uncovered in the Bulgarian League
and that UEFA has started recruiting for a new gambling investigation
unit after admitting that 25 UEFA Cup matches were being studied due to
irregular betting patterns. European football’s governing body said it
would launch a continent-wide task force to tackle match fixing and
illegal betting in all football competitions.
Declan Hill whose
book "The Fix - Soccer and Organized Crime" we reviewed last month
joined CanadaKicks Radio for a interview - Hill's book may not have
been the tipping point for the recent investigations but nonetheless he
has some interesting things to say about the state of the game.
