Samantha Diaz-Matosas Earns Soccer Buzz National Honor
South Carolina junior defender Samantha Diaz-Matosas has been named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week for her efforts in Carolina's 2-0 SEC weekend that included a goal and two assists for four points.
Diaz-Matosas had a career weekend for the Gamecocks that featured a combination of her old and new positions as she contributed on the defensive and offensive ends. In a 2-1 win against Mississippi State, Diaz-Matosas was instrumental on the back line in helping the team limit the Bulldogs to only four shots in the game - just two of them on goal. The Bulldogs did not get their first shot until 22 minutes in the game with the second coming in the 63rd minute. She also registered an assist to Kayla Grimsley on a goal in the third minute with a long free kick.
In a battle for second place in the SEC standings, Diaz-Matosas again helped keep the Rebels off the scoreboard in the first half before leading Carolina to a 3-2 victory with a little offense. A freshman starter at forward two years ago, Diaz-Matosas registered her second assist of the weekend to pull Carolina up 2-0 before knocking in the game-winning goal at 87:33. The goal was her second of the season and both have gone on to be game-winners.
Samantha played her club career at GSA and was a key member of the GSA 89 Phoenix Red. Congratulations Sam!
Natalie Douglass named North Georgia Athlete of the Week
Natalie Douglass has been named the North Georgia Athlete of the Week after scoring the first two goals of her career Sunday afternoon, sending the Lady Saints to a 2-2 tie with the University of Montevallo. She Scored the first goal of the game in the 51st minute as Casey Smith sent a corner kick into the box and Douglass sent it home for her first ever collegiate goal. She recorded another goal in the 67th minute, this time on a pass from Brittany Bauschka to give the Lady Saints a 2-0 lead. Douglass has anchored a group of freshman that have stepped up and helped lead North Georgia to a 3-3-2 record to start the 2008 season. The midfielder is second on the team in minutes played with 729, averaged more than 91 minutes per contest. Douglass will lead her team on the road next weekend as the Lady Saints look to pick up their first Peach Belt Conference win of the season at Lander University.
Natalie is a graduate of Brookwood High School and played her entire youth career at GSA. Natalie was a long-time member of the GSA 90 Phoenix Red team coached by Judson Hamby.

Ashlyn Henderson, a freshman from Atlanta, GA at North Greenville University, has been named the National Christian College Athletic Conference’s national soccer Student-Athlete of the week it was announced by the NCCAA office in Greenville, SC.

The U13 boys and Coach Bruno Kalonji won their division and were named champions at the CESA Classic tournament. They beat NASA in the finals, congratulations to all for a great tournament!
Among a plethora of Labor Day Tournament results on the Girls side of the ledger, one that stands out is a U14 final from the Atlanta Cup, where Campbell Chapman’s GSA Phoenix Red team beat in-state rival NASA Elite 2-0 in the championship game. The win repeated a victory for GSA over the same squad in last year’s Georgia State Cup final. Chapman expressed admiration for the NASA team and said he felt his squad were only slightly better than there opponents on the day.
For the tournament, GSA beat Roswell 3-2 after having a 3-0 lead, beat Concorde Fire 5-3 and losing a 3-0 lead then scoring two goals late, then lost to Virginia side Herndon FC 4-1 in a result Chapman said was thoroughly deserved.
The GSA 93 Phoenix Black Girls go undefeated as they entered the final match of the 2008 Atlanta Cup. Coach Casillas reported that the GFC Sr. Invitational Cup was a very competitive tournament. All of the GSA players performed with the best of their talents and with so much courage while at the same time they played good clean soccer. The Championship game was very evenly matched and the game was tied at the end of regulation.
