Champions
League, third qualifying round, second leg
A workman like
performance by Barcelona saw them through
against Wisla Krakow
despite a 1-0 defeat on Tuesday night, the 4-1 overall aggregate ensuring a
place in the league stage draw later this week. Atlético Madrid
will join them after an impressive 4-0 win over Schalke '04 the following
day, Olympic gold medal winner Kun Agüero heading home the first and
having a hand in the three others, which were scored by Diego Forlán,
Luis García and Maxi (from the penalty spot) after the break. (27.08.08)

Transfer
rumours
Less than one
week to go to the 31 August transfer deadline, and still the market is
sluggish. All of that could change though if Robinho gets the move he wants to
join Scolari at Chelsea, and if that happens it could spark off a last minute
spending spree. Egged on by an avaricious agent, the Brazilian star has made it
clear that he is not happy at Real Madrid, and he is doing all he can to
pressure the club to let him go (curiously a tactic often used by Madrid
themselves!). Meanwhile club president Ramón Calderón is
reportedly lining up a massive bid for David Villa, and if rumours are to be
believed Valencia have already turned down an offer of 47 million.
Cazorla is also on Schuster's shopping list.
Otherwise the
main movers this week have been Atlético Madrid, their management
supposedly unhappy at their pre-season performances. Valencia's Banega is
already close to a loan move to Mestalla, and as Diego would appear to be an
impossible dream, Brazil's Olympic star Thiago Neves is the new target.
Cléber has already moved on to Mallorca and Motta could be the next to
leave to make room, although Maniche will apparently be staying on after
convincing Aguirre of his good intentions. The club say that they will make the
changes irrespective of the result of their Champions League qualifier later
this week, although that will obviously influence how much cash they have to
spend. (25.08.08)

Copa del
Rey, first round
The Spanish cup
competition started this week, with lower division sides playing off for a spot
in the second round. Most matches take place on Wednesday, but Melilla and
Alzira have already booked their passage after extra time wins over Ceuta and
Ejea respectively. (25.08.08)

Spanish Super Cup, second
leg
Real
Madrid 4 - Valencia 2
Real
Madrid beat Valencia 4-2 in an event-packed second leg to take the
Spanish Super Cup for the eighth time in their history. The visitors were
defending a 3-2 lead from last weekend's first leg, and they went further ahead
when David Silva drilled a shot past Casillas on the half hour mark. Van der
Vaart got himself sent off for a hard foul on Mata soon afterwards, and
although Van Nistelrooy equalised from the penalty spot four minutes in to the
second half, things looked bleak for Madrid when Van Nistelrooy was also shown
the red card for a second bookable offence a few minutes later. Goals from
Ramos and substitutes De la Red and Higuaín turned the scoreline around
though, and a last minute strike from Morientes was not enough to save the day.

Friendly
international
Denmark 0 - Spain
3
A winning start
for Spain's new coach Vicente Del Bosque, his side running out 0-3
winners in a friendly game against Denmark. The match was overshadowed
though by the tragic air crash in Madrid earlier in the day in which over 150
people lost their lives, and a minute's silence was observed before kick off as
a mark of respect. All the goals came after the break, Xabi Alonso combining
with his Liverpool team mate Fernando Torres to open the scoring, and Xavi
making it two a few minutes later after picking up a cross from debutant Diego
Capel. The Sevilla winger set up Xabi Alonso for his second of the night near
the end, and there was still time for Cazorla to hit the post before the final
whistle. Nobody was celebrating though, and all thoughts were for the victims
and their families in Madrid. (20.08.08) |

Under 21 Euro
qualifiers
Russia 1 - Spain
2
Spain's
under 21 side are virtually sure of a place in next summer's European finals
after a 1-2 victory against their closest rivals, Russia. Xisco started
things off early on after running on to a pass from Granero to beat the local
keeper, and Jurado got the second, again after an assist from the Getafe
winger. Dmitry Kombarov got one back after the restart, but any hopes of a
Russian comeback ended when Granat and Kombarov's brother Kiryl were sent off
late on. (20.08.08)

Pre-season
fixtures
The big Spanish
summer tournaments took place over the last few days, with Recreativo kicking
off by winning their own Colombino trophy after beating Málaga and
Athletic Bilbao. Cádiz hosted the Ramón Carranza trophy as usual
despite their legal battle to be reinstated in the second division (their case
will be heard on 29th August, the day before the season starts). It was less
than friendly though, with the semi-final between Sevilla and Villarreal ending
in a brawl after Eguren, Viera, Capel and Dragutinovic were all sent off.
Cádiz surprisingly beat Athletic Bilbao in the other match, but went
down 0-3 to Sevilla in the final. Elsewhere Barcelona came from behind to beat
Boca Juniors 2-1 in their Gamper tournament, and Deportivo won through to a
meeting with Atlético Madrid in the final of their Teresa Herrera
trophy, which takes place tonight. (19.08.08) |

UEFA Cup,
second qualifying round, first leg
Deportivo could only draw
0-0 in their opening game against Hajduk Split, and they now
need at least a score draw in the return leg to qualify for the first round of
the competition. (14.08.08) |
