uefa.com - Žilina bank on what?
UEFA Cup hopefuls MŠK Žilina believe this could be their year as coach Pavel Vrba seeks to take the club to the next level in European competition.
Dream goal
The four-time Slovakian champions reached the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League last season and the same stage in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, but Czech trainer Vrba is dreaming of higher goals this time round. "I yearn for us to play in this season's UEFA Cup group stage," the 45-year-old told uefa.com. "We want to finally make the breakthrough. However, to do this, we have to get past Belarussian side [FC] MTZ-RIPO Minsk and then to survive two more rounds. We will fight all the way for sure, but we need to have luck."
Good start
Žilina commenced their European campaign with an excellent result in Minsk, gaining a 2-2 draw after a Róbert Jež equaliser from the penalty spot deep into added time, but Vrba is taking nothing for granted. "Nothing is decided yet," he added. "[MTZ-RIPO] have a good team with many national team players and both sides still have a chance ahead of Thursday's second leg."
European priority
Runners-up to FC Artmedia Petržalka last term, Žilina relinquished their Slovakian Superliga crown and although Vrba acknowledges he would like a repeat of his and the team's triumph in 2006/07, he is putting success on the continental stage at the top of his priority list. "Of course I would like to win another Slovakian title, but if I had to choose, I would prefer success in Europe," he said. "Making the UEFA Cup group stage would definitely be a success for us. But you know, the best option is success both at home and abroad!"
'Stronger side'
Despite Vrba's guarded optimism, he knows how hard the competition is especially when Žilina have not progressed further in the past with what he considered a better squad. "I think we actually had a stronger side when I arrived at the club," he added. "At that time, for example, Tomáš Hubočan [who now plays in Russia for UEFA Cup winners FC Zenit St. Petersburg] was in the team." However, Vrba is still confident Žilina can better their previous best in the UEFA Cup, when they reached the first round for the only time in 2003/04 succumbing 6-0 on aggregate to Dutch side FC Utrecht.

RODA OPT OUT OF HLEB DEAL
Roda JC have decided not to offer trialist Vyacheslav Hleb a contract.
The Eredivisie club wanted to sign Hleb, the younger brother of Barcelona's Alexander, on a season-long loan but his club FC MTZ RIPO Minsk were only interested in a sale.
"He is after all not the kind of player we need in the short term," director of football Martin van Geel told newspaper De Limburger.
"In the long run he can be of interest again because he is a really good player. So we will keep on following him."

How much money did the refs make tonight after betting MTZ would draw?
No comments, that was ridiculous! Don’t tell me that referee did not bet on the game or received some lump sum for the results. How could you explain extra 10 min of game where only 6 were added and added-time penalty on the last minute for this “foul” (see image)?

Puntus taking a punt on MTZ-RIPO
FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk may be relative newcomers in Europe, but coach Yuri Puntus is looking to "qualify for the group stage" as they start their UEFA Cup campaign.
Quick rise
The one-time tractor factory team made their debut in the Belarussian top flight in 2004, surviving a relegation play-off and winning the cup the following season to make their European debut in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup. They overcame Hungary's Ferencvárosi TC in the first qualifying round before bowing out to FK Teplice of the Czech Republic at the next stage, returning to UEFA competition in the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup.
Žilina tie
After a one-season absence from Europe, MTZ-RIPO are back again having won the Belarus Cup for a second time, and the 47-year-old Puntus – in charge again following a spell as Belarus coach – is looking forward to their tie against Slovakia's MŠK Žilina. "It's a pity we play the first leg at home as having the return leg at home is always an advantage," said the coach. "Still our goal remains the same; to qualify for the group stage. It's won't be easy, but we will do our best."
Big plans
MTZ-RIPO, Lithuania's FBK Kaunas and Scotland's Heart of Midlothian FC are bound together by their links to Russian-Lithuanian businessman Vladimir Romanov, and he and Puntus have big plans for MTZ-RIPO. "We are satisfied with our draw," Puntus said. "I didn't really care about our opponents as it was known from the start that we would rather face a strong team. Maybe, somewhere deep in my mind, I wanted to play against AC Bellinzona, who were not in the Switzerland's top flight last season."
Unknown quantity
Puntus thinks his side have a "50-50 chance" against Žilina, though midfielder Oleg Strakhanovich admits the Slovakian side are something of an unknown quantity. "Žilina are probably a good team, although I don't know much about them," he said. "We don't have to be afraid anyway. We want to qualify for the group stage, so we have to get past the first qualifying round in order to achieve our goal."
High-scoring games
They certainly have the firepower to do that although a leaky defence should ensure an exciting tie. After 13 league games this season, MTZ-RIPO are second in Belarus with 26 points with a phenomenal average of more than four goals being scored in their games – they have scored 35 and conceded 21. Star players Strakhanovich, Aleksandr Sulima and Viacheslav Hleb are ready for their next challenge though the latter – the brother of Arsenal FC midfielder Aleksandr Hleb – may soon join Dutch side Roda JC.

Draw sends MTZ-RIPO to the town of Žilina
FC MTZ-RIPO will start their UEFA Cup campaign with a July 17th's game in Misnk against MŠK Žilina following today's draw for the first qualifying round in Nyon. Second game will be played on July 31st in Slovakia.
MŠK Žilina is a Slovak football club, playing in the town of Žilina and is one of the most successful teams in Slovak top division (since 1993), having won 4 titles and 2 runners-up in last 7 years. The club was founded towards the end of 1908 under the Hungarian name Zsolnai testgyakorlók köre. Between the two world wars, when for a brief time Slovakia became an independent nation, the club won Slovakian championship twice, in 1928 and 1929. The club played 31 seasons in the First Division of the Czechoslovakian League.
In 1961 Žilina reached the final of the nationalcup, where they lost to Dukla Prague, the eventual Czechoslovakian champion. In spite of the defeat Žilina gained entry into Europe for the first time and competed in the Cup winners' cup. In their first venture into European, Žilina made the quarter-final, but were defeated by Fiorentina. At home Žilina won 3-2, but in Italy, Fiorentina proved to be too strong and won the game 2-0. In 1969.
In 1996 Žilina was promoted from the second division after spending just a season there. In 1997, the club gained entry to the Intertoto Cup, but only came fourth in a group of five. Again they entered the Intertoto Cup in 1999 but just as last time failed to make any impression, being beaten 4-2 by FC Metz in the second round.
In the autumn of 2000, coach Ladislav Jurkemik joined the club only to depart halfway through the 2001/02 season to become coach of the Slovak national team. Nevertheless the team continued with its winning mentality and became national champions with the help of new coach, Leoš Kalvoda.
In 2002/03 the season, now under the management of Milan Lešický, the club succeeded in retaining its national championship. The following season began in a disappointing way and coach Lešický with Ladislav Jurkemik, for his second spell in charge. He led the club to 10 successive victories and just clinched the title due to goal difference.
One of the club's most notable players of the modern time is Marek Mintál, in two successive seasons he was the top goal scorer in the league with 21 and 20 goals respectively, and was a major contributor to Žilina winning their three Slovakian titles and earning himself a move to 1. FC Nuremberg of Germany.
