La sele gets a new face:
Guatemala to unveil Adidas uniform against Panama.
With a new play comes a new face. Guatemala who plowed ahead en alta mar in the previous round will open the hexagonal on Feb. 9th against los canaleros de Panama. The excitment of qualifying for the WC2006 has stirred the hearts of  both loyal and even fair-weather fans. Furthermore, the anticipation of thrashing Panama is hightened by the arrival of a new uniform, leaving  many wondering whether the  traditional transversal will replace the current vertical. Although not yet confirmed, I have a hunch that the Fedefutbol will restore la transversal.

Guatemala ends year on bad note
Miami Jan.6
What looked to be a prosperous game for the sea of blue ended out to be a nightmare. Guatemala opened the game with a beautiful goal by Ruiz in the 4th minute. The Guatemalan side made good use of a counter attack which shredded the Ticos defense. Guatemala then put 10 men in the backfield and employed a more defensive game which only held till the 8th minute when Pablo Wanchope slid the ball past Estrada. Guatemala having trouble keeping control on their own side left Edgar Estrada helpless. Once again the Ticos knocked the door down in the 43d minute giving them momentum going into the second half. Guatemala heads up still in the  game substituted Garcia and Machon.

The Red Card
The unexpected red card flew up in the first five minutes of the second half. German Ruano, defensive midfielder was expelled and gave Guatemala little hope.
Much credit can be given to the Dt. Julio Cesar Cortes for a bittersweet  season. Cortes joined the staff spring of 2000 making him the sixth coach of the qualification round.
Costa Rica being the more physical team took advantage of the expulsion and rained shots on Estrada. Things got uglier and the fans more upset. Guatemala desperately puting the ball in the penalty area, was awarded a penalty kick which Ruiz nailed.. Costa Rica still hungry kept on attacking and scored the final goal.

Guatemala beat, ended the year on a bad note. The sloppiest game of the year ended in a 5-2 loss, leaving everybody puzzled.
"En Costa Rica dicen que aca no hay buenos jugadores y hoy demostre que estan equivocados."
Carlos Ruiz and Guillermo Ramirez to PAS Giannina
The twenty-one year old Ruiz turned down the Los Angeles Galaxy saying that it had been his life long dream to play in Europe. He was offered 280,000 American dollars, but felt that the Greek league was more competative. Weeks after his trip to Greece, Ramirez met up with Ruiz in Giannina.
