News Update

There was just one game at Kiltipper at the weekend but despite that fact the goals were aplenty. The Under 17s took to the park on Sunday morning for their league game against north Dublin side Stella Maris and, despite the very windy conditions, enjoyed a 6-0 win. The lads have now played three, winning two and drawing one so they can be pleased with the bright start they have made to the season.

Rovers' very own Fernando Torres is Stephen Canavan. Torres is his new nickname and when you see his photograph you'll fully understand how he acquired that! Canavan got on the scoresheet very early in the game along with Polish signing Lukasz Jagodzinski to give the Hoops a 2-0 lead and they settled very quickly as a result. Centre half Dave Ryan scored a rare header to make it 3-0 with Gary Shaw and Jimmy Farrell adding to the score to make it 5-0 by half time. Substitute Robbie Shorten got the sixth and final goal of the game twenty-five minutes into the second half. Manager Frank Coukles was naturally quite pleased with the result. "It's going well for us so far this season, although I fully accept it is early days yet but we have a number of new signings in the squad and it is a major plus that they are settling in so quickly. I was very pleased with the performance against Stella, despite the conditions we knocked the ball around well and played some really nice stuff".

Other results from the weekend:
U11: Dunboyne 1 - 5 Shamrock Rovers
U12: Shamrock Rovers 9 - 0 Manortown United
U13: Shamrock Rovers 2 - 1 Cabinteely
U14: Drogeda Boys 2 - 5 Shamrock Rovers
U15: St. Joseph's Boys 0 - 1 Shamrock Rovers
U16: St. Patrick's Athletic 1 - 4 Shamrock Rovers
U18: Knocklyon 2 - 2 Shamrock Rovers

Super Sundays Results Update

The encouraging form shown by all the SRFC Sunday teams so far this season has given everyone involved a big boost. The action came thick and fast this weekend with three of the four teams in action at Kiltipper. The Under 15s continued their impressive unbeaten run going with a 3-0 win against St. Francis. Meetings between the two clubs are always very competitive given the local nature of the tie. Eanna Forde, Martin Cowan and Paul Blake got the goals for the Hoops.

The Under 16s also had a saintly assignment when they came up against north Dublin side St. Kevins. The Hoops were winning 3-0 at half time but let the Saints back in after the break. Dave Malone's lad's got back on track though and clinched the full points with a 4-2 win. The scorers for the Hoops were Sean McLaughlin, Keith Kelch, James Mooney and an own goal.

The Under 18s followed later in the afternoon and fell behind twice to Lourdes Celtic but battled to the very end with their second goal coming with what was almost the last kick of the game. So it was a share of the honours in this game. Ian Nolan and Willie O'Brien were on target for Rovers.

Earlier in the day the Under 17s travelled northside to Fairview Park and carved out a hard earned 2-1 win against Sheriff. Gary Shaw and Stephen Canavan got the goals in a game which the Hoops gradually gained the upper hand to finish well.

The U17s began their season the previous Sunday with a 3-3 draw at home to Rangers, Having gone a goal down the Hoops responded almost immediately with a well-delivered free kick from Barry 'Baz' Grehan. An own goal and a late Stephen Cronin goal secured a share of the points for Frank Coules' lads.

The weekend also witnessed some big wins with the Under 14s defeating Naas 9-0. Hoops' keeper Ryan White got amongst the scorers when he converted a penalty. The Under 12s also had a rather big win on Saturday when they ran amok scoring 14 goals against Naas.

Padraig Amond - progressing well whilst out on on loan

It's good to see Padraig getting some fine experience and scoring goals at Kildare County. He is certainly making all the right noises in the first division. Always a favourite at Rovers, we look forward to seeing Podge again soon. Click here to see the eircom league write up on our young star.

Gary Hilliard on Ireland standby

Gary Hilliard has been placed on stand-by for Republic of Ireland U19s for their double header away to Czech Republic on 22nd April. These games form part of the U19s on-going preparation for the qualifying stages of the UEFA European Championships.

Rovers win in Dallas

The Rovers U18 team played a friendly in Dallas today against the Japanese National Champions, Takigawa Dai-Ni, and beat them 4-1. Andrew Hand, Paul Brady and Jonathan Long were among the scorers. After playing some close games in the group stage v Eintracht Frankfurt and Tigres, the team met one of the best in Brazilians Sao Paulo and lost 6-1. The win today will be a nice filip and reward for the team and management for their considerable efforts.

Young Hoops go down to Sao Paulo

Tired legs caught up with Shamrock Rovers when they were beaten 6-1 by an impressive Sao Paulo in their third Dallas Cup game in four days. Rovers went 3-0 down in the opening 15 minutes, then further behind to 4-0 before half time before Stephen Nolan got his second goal of the tournament to make it 4-1. Rovers battled hard against a rampant Brazilian side but conceded twice more after the break. "Sao Paulo are a different class and their finishing is class", said Hoops manager Stephen Fennell. "The players got an insight into what the best in the world is. We nearly took Eintracht Frankfurt and Tigres but Sao Paulo are on a different level altogether. To put into perspective, they turned down a bid of £4.5 million for their captain. Their performance was world-class, I am proud of our players, it was our best performance even though we were at the wrong end of the result". Rovers will stay over for a couple of days during which they play a friendly against a Japanese team and possibly another game against an American team.
It's a disappointing end for the lads but no doubt the experience will have learned them a lot and they should be proud to be the first Irish club in this prestigious tournament. Click here for more details.
UPDATE: Sao Paulo went on to beat Real Madrid 4-0 in next round.

U18s lose to Tigres of Mexico in Dallas Cup

Shamrock Rovers were unfortunately on the wrong end of a seven goal thriller against Mexican side Tigres at the Dallas Cup today. The Hoops fought back after being 3-0 then 4-1 down only to miss a penalty in the 90th minute. Ciaran Kilduff scored twice while Stephen Nolan got Rovers' other goal. Despite the hard game against Eintracht just 24 hours earlier, the Hoops fought gallantly but playing against the second full-time outfit in a short space of time took its toll on the Dublin side in the end. By all accounts, Rovers gave a tremendous performance and will be more than up to it when they meet Brazilian side Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

Dallas Cup: Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 Shamrock Rovers

A brave performance by a Shamrock Rovers side who gave their all wasn't enough against Eintracht Frankfurt in the opening round of the Dallas Cup. The Hoops went down 1-0 having played in temperatures of 88 degrees. Dean Lawrence, who gave an outstanding display, was Rovers Man of the Match. Rovers face Tigres in their next assignment today.

After hard work and preparation, the day has finally arrived for the Under 18 team who, on Friday, jetted out to the United States to take part in the Dallas Cup. They’re up against the best in the world and the experience will certainly be one the lads will remember, hopefully for all the right reasons. It will be a great test of character for the Hoops; they would obviously like to acquit themselves well during their stay in the States, but especially as this is their final year together in Schoolboy football.
A big thank you to everyone who helped fundraise for the trip. Without your help it just wouldn’t be possible for any of the underage teams to participate at the level such as the Dallas Cup.
The Tallaght Hoops S.C. staged a quiz night at the Jobstown Inn and raised EUR1,000 in aid of the trip to Dallas. “The night went very well and we hit our target in terms of fundraising. It was great to be able to hand over a cheque for one thousand euro to help get the lads on their way to Dallas”, said Martin Genockey, Vice-Chairman of Tallaght Hoops.

Under 16s in Milk Cup

The Shamrock Rovers Schoolboys U16 team have been accepted into the Northern Ireland Milk Cup and are now preparing for the tournament, which will take place between 30th July and 3rd August. Before that though, the team, managed by Mark Kelly and Frank Coules, have approximately fourteen league games of their season remaining and they are doing quite well. Promotion to Premier for 2007/08 is a priority and with midweek games kicking in from next week these lads are going to be busy indeed. The Milk Cup will celebrate its twenty-fifth year in 2007 and it promises to be an occasion to remember so we are delighted that Shamrock Rovers will be there along with the elite of world youth soccer. Quite a number of the team were at the Milk Cup two years ago when they took part in the Junior Section and got to the quarter-final stage of the competition. These lads are very excited with the prospect of returning to Coleraine and hopefully doing even better than 2005.

13s IN WITH A SHOUT

Fingers crossed, the U13 Major A team will gain promotion to Major for next year and continue to build on that for 15 Premier in 2008/09. Dave Malone’s charges are up there challenging and are in a strong position to win the league title. What a change in fortunes this team has witnessed in the past two seasons since ‘Big Dave’ took over. They’ve made a steady transformation and the future looks bright for them.

U18s beaten in Cup Qtr Final

The U18s went out of the U18 FAI Cup at Kiltipper yesterday losing on penalties to Castlebar Celtic. Ahead 3-2 going into the last 5 minutes, a defensive error cost the team a goal to send the game in extra time. No more scores and then it went to penalties. We lost 4-1 on penalties.

Hilliard on standby for Ireland U19s

Rovers own, Gary Hilliard has been asked to be on standby for the Ireland U19 squad travelling to play in a friendly tournament in Portugal April 2nd-8th. Games are against Germany, Portugal and Ukraine.

U18s in FAI Youth Cup Qtr Final

Rovers U18s had a comfortable 2-0 victory against Cobh Ramblers on Sunday with goals from Falco Lorenzo and Johnathon Long. Shamrock Rovers Under 18s will now play Castlebar Celtic in the quarter final of the FAI Youth Cup this coming Sunday, 25th March. The teams met at the same stage of the competition last year with the Mayo club squeezing a 1-0 win so Rovers will be looking to reverse the score this time. It's a huge game for the Hoops as they prepare to fly out to the U.S. for the Dallas Cup. Kick off is at 2.30pm at Carolan Park, Kiltipper. All support welcome.

Educational Initiatives at Shamrock Rovers

Shamrock Rovers are launching a new, football-based range of educational CD-Roms to encourage learning through football, and will be targeting them at primary schools across Dublin.

Rovers through to last 16 FAI U18 Youth Cup

Rovers U18s travelled to Dundalk and overcame a resilient home-side to win 1-0. Fresh from his U21 futsal exploits, Ciaran Kilduff settled the game with a well-taken goal midway through the second half.

“We are happy with the result. We fought well and just about shaded the game. Although some aspects of the performance were not great, we dug in and are delighted to be through to the next round.” says u18 manager Stephen Fennell.

Rovers are due to meet Cobh Ramblers in the next round at home.

54a bus to Kiltipper

Shamrock Rovers wish to advise all those using Carolan Park, Kiltipper of the extension of Dublin Bus route 54a to Ellensborough as and from Sunday, December 10th. The route travels from the city centre to Tallaght via the Square and up Whitestown Way, Killinarden Way and up to the Ellensborough roundabout. There is a good service in the evenings and on Sundays for those who will benefit from the improvement.

Keith Lyons 2006 SRFC Youth team Player of the Year

Shamrock Rovers Schoolboys wish to congratulate Keith Lyons (pictured with Chairman Jonathan Roche) on winning the 2006 SRFC Youth team Player of the Year. Keith, from Kingswood, Tallaght, has played all of his football with the Hoops. He captained his team to a league and cup double in 2002/03, and also captained the team at the Northern Ireland Milk Cup in 2003 and 2005 against illustrious opponents such as Everton, Hearts, Barcelona and Feyenoord amongst others. Although just 18 years old, Keith progressed to the Hoops Under 21 team this year.

We also send our congratulations to former players Ian Ryan (2006 SRFC Young Player of the Year), and Padraig Amond and Eric McGill (joint Under 21 Player of the Year).

Hilliard on stand-by for Ireland

Rovers talented youth team player Gary Hilliard has been selected on standby for Republic of Ireland u19s v France next month. Gary may be called into the full under19 squad should the squad suffer withdrawals.

Youth Team Update

The youths are now into the 3rd round of the FAI youths cup and face Athlone Town at home. They have also progressed in the LFA Youths cup and face the winners of Baldoyle/Swords Celtic in addition to the league cup where the face St. Joseph Boys.

Team manager Stephen Fennell is happy with the progress to date and says “with the promotion of the likes of Keith Lyons, Dane Massey, Ciaran Kilduff and Brendan Dawson of last year’s under 17 team into our u21s, rebuilding the youths was a priority and there is a dozen or so new faces in this year’s squad. It has taken a little time for the lads to gel and integrate into a unit and one or two early results suffered but over the past month or so we have seen real progress from the players. They are working extremely hard and the overall play is definitely improving all the time.

Fennell with former Rovers player Keith O’Halloran as coach adds “we try and get a balance - whilst results are very important the most critical aspect is that the players improve and give themselves the best chance of progressing into the senior set-up. Pat (Scully) has been brilliant to the young players at the club and he has given openings to the likes of Eric McGill, Ian Ryan and Padraig Amond which makes our job easier in attracting other good youth players to the club.

“We have seen the u21s have a great season and athe players have progressed under Dave (Campbell) and Mitch (Whitty) and so there is a good nucleus of youth players at the club at the moment which should stand the club in good stead going forward in the next couple of years.”

Hopefully we will see more young players progress through the ranks over the next twelve months or so. The challenge for the current youth team crop of players is to improve even more and get the quality of our play up to a really high standard and at same time give themselves the best possible of chance of progressing into the u21s / senior setup.”

Schoolboys AGM

16's Advance in Barry Cup

The SRFC U16 team gained a hard-earned win on Sunday, 24th September when they beat Drogheda Boys 3-2 in the first round of the SFAI Barry Cup. The game, which was played in Drogheda, appeared to be slipping away from the Hoops who went 2-0 down at one stage. New signing Anthony Ryan gave Rovers some hope when he clawed one back in the second half and then Ian Rochford swooped for the equaliser. The game went into extra time when Gary Shaw delivered a low ball in front of Johnny McGee (pictured right). The Hoops man beat the advancing 'keeper and put the ball out of reach to grab the all-important winning goal.

Lawrence doing nicely

Dean Lawrence, who has been with Shamrock Rovers since the age of 13, is progressing well in the ranks of the Under 21 team this season. Consistency has been the hallmark of Dean's time at the club and it came as no surprise then when he was given a call up for the first team squad for the FAI Cup games against Bohemians. "I've been playing well for the Under 21's, I've missed only about two games and that was because I had a sprained ankle", said Dean.
From Fettercairn in West Tallaght, Dean has been an excellent ambassador for Shamrock Rovers Schoolboys playing in the Milk Cup in 2003 and 2005. Although he was only called up to the first team to provide cover for the Cup games, Dean has fully enjoyed the experience of training with the senior players. "It has been a great experience for me", he said.
