Commentary by Colin Aldis

Two years ago, Arsenal beat Leeds 5-0 at the same stage of the competition. In the League Cup final of 2007, it wasonly 1-0 to the gunners. As with 2006 and 2007, Arsenal also won the league title in 2008, so wanted to achieve the double once more, and. If Arsenal had taken a quarter of their chances, this would have been a record score in the 38th FA Cup Final. The second half goals enabled Arsenal to lift the trophy for a record 9th time in their 21 year history.
The scoreline would have been so different, but for the heroics by England 3rd choice keeper, Carly Telford who was voted by injured Leeds veteran Lucy Ward, as player of the match. A string of saves in the first half kept it scoreless, with a push over the bar from Jayne Ludlow, the best of a good dozen.. At the other end, Emma Byrne touched the ball only a couple of times. Leeds pushed forward a bit more at the start of the second half, but the breakthrough came when a subdued Rachel Yankey showed some of her usual speed, moving inside from the left, and playing a perfect pass for Kelly Smith to slide the ball low into the right corner. Two goals followed quickly, with a free kick by Lianne Sanderson, met by Jayne Ludlow on the edge of the goal area, and she guided the ball through the legs of the keeper and into the net.
In a season of numerous goals for the mighty gunners, Lianne
Sanderson had already scored 50 in all competition, and added another with a shot from the edge of the penalty area, which deflected into the left corner.
The relatively young Leeds side decided to fight back, and some great skill from stalwart Sue Smith allowed her to hit a superb shot against the top of the right post, and Jess Clarke followed up to nod the rebound into the top right corner of the net.

Manager Vic Akers made 3 changes with just over 15 minutes to go, and despite reports of an injury, it was Julie Fleeting who created the last goal, with a steered shot against the left post, and Kelly Smith had followed up, and tapped the ball home from a few metres.
With one more league match to play, and one England international (away in Belarus) for many of the Arsenalplayers, they can celebrate another successful season and enjoy a well earned rest.
