Spurs are set to spend big once again this summer by signing Roman Pavlyuchenko from Spartak Moscow. Anyone who saw the Russian play during Euro 2008 must surely have been impressed by the way that he took his three goals (especially the opener against Holland), although it’s asking a lot for the striker to make an instant impact in the Premier League. It’s clear that Mike Ashley has tightened the purse strings at St James’ Park, and the consequences could be bad as far as the team is concerned. Many fans will have been disappointed to see Newcastle lose James Milner, even if they did get £10 million from Aston Villa for him, and the words of their manager won’t fill them with confidence either. After a summer of spending, it’s perfectly natural that the Black Cats would have to release the odd player or two. While Roy Keane has bemoaned the fact that a lot of his squad members would prefer to sit on the bench / play for the reserves than get first-team football elsewhere, it appears that this midfielder is not one of them. This source claim it’s a distinct possibility, but before any United fan starts to feel gutted that they may have missed out on the talented Bulgarian, the newspaper in question has been known to get it wrong on several occasions. In the space of a few hours. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Have Arsenal got back on track after their 4-0 thumping of FC Twente? The proof of the pudding will be on Saturday evening, when Newcastle ride into town, having picked up four points from their opening two matches. There are one or two players that need to show the supporters that they are fully committed to the club, although Gael Clichy has called for fans to get behind a duo who have come in for criticism recently. It would be interesting to read Gareth Barry’s autobiography of 2008. The England midfielder had a strong finish to the season with Aston Villa, handed in a transfer request, got caught up in a massive tug-of-war between the Midlands club and Liverpool, got dropped from the first team, played in the reserves, came back into the first team, looked like he was going to Anfield and then declared that he was staying at Villa Park. It’s now almost time for him to face the club he nearly joined this summer. [Read the rest of this entry »]

The Premier League is becoming bigger and better than ever before. There used to be a time when South American and European players would come to England to finish off their careers, picking up a final pay cheque of an illustrious career. These days, footballers are arriving at their peak, or even in a bid to improve their game and showcase their talents to a global audience. [Read the rest of this entry »]

There were far too many instances of footballers getting up close and personal with referees last season - and not in a good way! Chelsea were especially bad at ganging up on the man in black when a decision went against them, snarling like a pack of hounds and being charged twice for failing to keep their players under control. However, it’s a former Blues player now plying his trade at Arsenal who has criticised the FA’s attempt to curb players’ enthusiasm this season. [Read the rest of this entry »]

It’s not much fun being a County fan at the moment. The Rams were a laughing stock in the Premier League last season, winning just one match all term. Things have not gone much better this campaign, despite manager Paul Jewell spending plenty of cash to try and bounce back into the top flight at the first time of asking. It now appears as though their players are trying to get away from the club as fast as they can! [Read the rest of this entry »]

Don’t expect Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov to come out of hiding anytime soon. From the looks of things, the Bulgarian sulk is going to be stuck at White Hart Lane at least until January (Man U seem to be giving up hope). For most players, that would mean playing some first-team football; however, for Berby, that could mean a trip down to the reserves until he gets his act together. [Read the rest of this entry »]
