Ferrymead Bays Player makes NZ Secondary Schools Team

Jordan Swaney who signed for Mitre 10 Ferrymead Bays in May this year has been selected for the NZ Secondary School football team to travel to United Kingdom and Europe in September this year.

After extensive Regional and National trials Jordan was “thrilled” to be selected. Ferrymead Mega Mitre 10 and have helped Jordan towards the cost of the trip with a sponsorship. Jordan has made a considerable sacrifice and effort to reach this level and it is hoped this will be a springboard to further honours .

Mitre 10 Ferrymead Bays Football avoid relegation

The Mitre 10 Mega Ferrymead Bays Football team have as good as avoided any chance of relegation with a 3-3 draw with third placed Halswell United AFC. The game played at Cuthberts Green due to all grounds this side of town being closed after  the 100mm of rain which fell last week. It is the first time in memory that the sand based free draining Barnett Park has not been able to field a scheduled match. Even in the snow storm in 2003 the No2 pitch was the only pitch in Christchurch that was used.

As Ferrymead Coach Steve Bignall said at the aftermatch “Halswell should buy a lotto ticket.”  As despite only having four chances on goal they managed to score in three of them. While Mitre10 Bays had around twenty chances but could only convert three. Player of the day Batram Suri scored twice and Wiremu Piercey the other one. Ferrymead dominated the game but never once found themselves leading. The ball was put in the net several times which were not counted due to offside or an infringement was spotted. Mitre 10 Ferrymead has played the top three sides in recent weeks and while dominating have let in soft goals and failed to score when the opportunity arose meaning results have been hard to come by. With only four games left  it is expected that one game we will click and beat a higher placed team comprehensively. However time is running out.

The SBS Women’s Premier team beat Halswell 2-0 on Saturday to secure third place on the table. Goals went to Ruth Bourke and Golden Boot leader Clare Warner. This game was played at Templeton Domain one of the few pitches playable in the city. SBS Ferrymead played well and deserved the comfortable win. It was an improvement on last weeks game where they lost 5-1 to Western in a game where they did not fire, this loss has probably eliminated any chance of the league title. The Semi final of the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup is scheduled for Tuesday 12th August, however this may change depending on ground conditions.

The rest of the Clubs 50+ teams have been unable to play for the second week in a row , with the Junior teams having not played for a month. Let’s hope for better weather next week when the Men play Western at Walter Park and the Women play league leaders Coastal Spirit at Barnett Park.

SBS Bays beat league Leaders 2-0

The SBS Ferymead Bays Premier women’s’ team put on the performance of the season to beat the League leaders Coastal Spirit 2-0 on Saturday. This result has opened the competition right up after Coastal Spirit had  a 6 point lead. Goals were scored by Shelley Mc Dowall in the first half and Clare Warner in the second half.  The win was thoroughly deserved with SBS Bays dominating their highly fancied rivals on a wet spongy pitch at Bexley.

This Saturday they take on Western at Walter park and another result there would put them right in the hunt for the title again.

The Mitre 10 Premier Men’s teams disappointing results continue with a 1-0 loss to 2nd placed Nomads on Saturday. While the teams are at opposite ends of the table the game did not reflect that, with Bays deserving at least a point but there inability to put away their chances cost them the game once more. Player of the day was new signing Scott Hawker from Parklands. The previous week against Burnside the team were leading 2-0 at half time with Batram Suri taking scoring twice. However they squandered their lead in the second half and ending up drawing 3-3.

The Mitre10 Premier Men’s team are away to league leaders and Chatham cup semi finalists Nelson on Sunday, Ferrymead are the only team to have beaten Nelson this year and are capable of doing it again.

The Junior teams are all preparing well with Michael Braithwaite’s Gold Coast bound  15th Division  section 1 team now leading the section after a comprehensive 4-1 win over nearest rival Burnside. The 15th Grade team will represent Ferrymead Bays for the 4th year in a row at the Australian Champions Cup. They have been fundraising all year, thanks for the garage sale support and please also support the raffle out now.

Ken Beaumont’s Div 2 Men’s continue to lead although by a solitary point only. This in spite of being called upon to help out the reserves and first team with players the last two weeks. Mike Moores 10th Grade team continue to lead there competition, while the 12th A’s have slipped back to second place but the 12th B have taken the lead in Division 2.

Lets hope for some better ground conditions next Saturday so all teams can play the flowing football we are capable of.
